DJ Tommy D (also known as DJ D-Gnosis) grew up in
the small town of Petersburg, Ohio, where he developed a love
for music of different types. He moved to Columbus, Ohio, at the
end of the summer in 1989 to pursue an Aerospace Engineering degree
at The Ohio State University, but little did he know, there would
be something else in his future. He ventured out onto the strip
of bars to a club called Purity, where he experienced a sound
like no other he had ever heard back home. It was a mixture of
industrial and electronic dance music finely blended by DJ Zero
and DJ Rob Engel. Watching them made him want to learn how it
was done. He then began the journey that he continues today.
He started out as "DJ Tommy D" in 1989 and eventually
played at just about every club on the campus' legendary High
Street strip, as well as performing at various warehouse and house
parties. He has dropped tunes from almost every genre of music
at one time or another, and used this variety to help him fine
tune his mixing abilities. However, his true passion now is for
progressive house and trance. He credits the incredible sounds
of Sasha, Digweed, and Paul van Dyk for driving him to the love
he has for the sounds they define to this day.
In June of 2001, he almost decided to give up DJing. It was then
that he lost his very best friend, business partner, and former
college roommate Michael deBruin (known by most as Big Mike) to
an untimely death stemming from diabetes. It was "Mikey"
that gave "Tommy D" his name in the beginning, and his
loss really created an emotional impact that almost caused him
to step away from the turntables. However, his family (wife Amy,
oldest daughter Jordan, and his twin girls Kessi and Kylie) and
a strong group of friends inspired him to return to the decks
after a few months away.
Since then, Tommy D has resolidified himself as one of the best
DJs in the midwest. In 2003, he won the "Greater Columbus
DJ Championships" against an incredible pool of talented
DJs, and has been booked to play events with DJs like PvD, Carl
Cox, Tiesto, Christopher Lawrence, Paul Oakenfold, and many other
of the world's greatest DJs. The fire inside is now burning stronger
than ever, and the journey continues........
