London based Terry Church is a sorely underrated DJ talent. His
unique mixing technique, passion and quirky style has earned him
sets all over the UK warming up for the best of them. He's still
only 21-years-old.
Terry's best known in Eastern Europe despite living in London,
and has become one of the region's most sought after UK DJs. He
runs Bosnia's biggest night - London Underground, he hosts one
of the most popular dance music radio shows in Bosnia, Croatia
and Serbia, and has built up a large following in the area. There
are very few international DJs that could lay claim to have developed
the Bosnian electronic music scene more than Terry, and he plays
in the country every month.
Where did it all begin? Terry's major early influences were Sasha
and John Digweed. Aged 14 he purchased his first set of decks,
and within a year he secured his first residency at Bar Coast
in Guildford, Surrey. He built up a solid reputation for rocking
dance floors with his progressive house sound, and in 2001 was
awarded the title of 'Best Young DJ' in the south of England,
after a gruelling competition. His award culminated in warming
up for breakbeat legend Krafty Kuts at the Rox festival. With
a remarkably mature musical taste for such a young age, Terry
won the competition by mixing up breaks, tech house, electro and
tribal in just 15 minutes in a very original manner. The 6000
people who watched his set were blown away.
This award proved to be a launchpad for Terry as more and more
gigs began to come his way. A few years later and the list of
successful gigs and top DJs he's spun with has grown. He's played
alongside many big name DJs including James Holden, Sister Bliss,
Nick Warren, Tomcraft, and Jonathan Lisle; for nights that include
the main room of The Gallery, Sancho Panza, Stripped, Alt*Ctrl,
Become One, and Dtour; and at clubs such as Turnmills, Heaven,
333, Ember, and The Pool Bar.
Terry runs his own weekly night at the Meze Lounge in Chelsea,
London giving him an opportunity to experiment with different
styles in a way that he is unable to do when playing one-off gigs
at clubs. This has enabled Terry to build up a varied record collection
comprising of progressive house, tech-house, breakbeat, electro,
and minimal techno. He is also involved in organising one-off
secret after-parties on a Sunday morning for the post-Fabric crowd
allowing him to play to a devoted following.
It is his mash up of different styles that define his London
and Bosnian residencies, and his radio show. "Eclecticism
rules," he says. "I always think it's important as a
DJ to keep things exciting and fresh, but playing the same genre
all night is not interesting or exciting for me. That's why I
think Eastern Europeans have especially warmed to me, because
musically, they haven't become too genre-specific. They're more
concerned with having a damn good party."
The future is full of promise for Terry who has recently been
asked to tour Croatia and has a tour of Asia also in pipeline.
With this busy schedule it's amazing that Terry still finds time
to cram in his job as a music journo and website editor for DJ
Magazine.
