of his DJ powers with top-rated urban club night Smoove”
-Tense
MOBO Award-winning DJ Shortee Blitz is the country’s top
Hip Hop and R&B deck innovator and with two weekly radio shows
on Kiss FM, a television show on Kiss TV, a residency at Smoove
at Ministry of Sound, and a column in Hip Hop Connection, he is
in high demand. Mr Blitz has played alongside the cream of Hip
Hop & R&B including Jay-Z, De La Soul, Rock Steady Crew,
The Fugees, Cypress Hill, Jeru the Damaja, Taskforce, Rodney P,
Klashnekoff, Redman and Run DMC.
Plus his Sony Radio Award-winning show has attracted guests in
the shape of Busta Rhymes, Nas, Missy Elliott, Common, Roots Manuva,
X-ecutioners, Ty, Twista, Blak Twang and LL Cool J. And, it’s
not just in the UK that Shortee Blitz is known for his signature
skills of cutting and mixing as well as continually tearing the
roof off with his unique ability to tease the crowd to the point
of near explosion.
The man they call Shortee Blitz, plays as far afield as Dubai,
Hong Kong, Kenya and Australia. Shortee grew up in Nottingham
where his uncles exposed him to everything from Ska and Reggae
to Rock, early Hip Hop and Electro. Way before he bought his first
set of decks he was teaching himself to scratch on a Saisho Midi
System by using the turntable and the volume control on Rick James’
‘Give It To Me Baby’.
In 1992, he bought his first set of decks and quickly formed
the Class Act sound system. House parties ensued every Saturday
and it was during the next two years that Shortee gained the bulk
of his spinning experience. “We’d kick off the door
to a house, bring in our set and play until the police came and
stopped us. But in 1994 when the DTI came in and banned parties
of more than ten people, I thought ‘fuck this’ and
I started playing at clubs.” 1993 saw Shortee Blitz join
Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr Dre for an impromptu beatboxing bout during
their gig at the Brixton Academy. Shortee impressed them so much
that they took him backstage, gave him £200 and asked him
to it again at the next day.
This was to set the tone for years to come and things started
to move quickly for a young Shortee Blitz living in Brixton. The
next two years were a turning point for Shortee, and DJ-ing for
Ty and Scientists of Sound was a crucial time. Shortee credits
Ty with giving him the confidence to talk into a mic and communicate
with people on a large scale. Shortee was also DJing for the Scientists
Of Sound and his first tour saw him supporting the Wu Tang Clan
who were fresh from releasing the 36 Chambers LP.
Other gigs were coming in slowly and one at Subterrania turned
out to be more fruitful than most with Dave VJ from Kiss FM asking
him to replace DJ Pogo on Max & Dave’s Hip Hop show.
Shortee took up the offer and joined Kiss with a weekly 15 minute
mix slot. As his popularity within the station grew, Shortee landed
the role of heading up the Clubs Promotion & Street Team at
the seminal Hip Hop label Rawkus Records where he A&R-ed the
remix of Talib Kweli’s ‘Down For The Count’
Featuring Blak Twang and Ty.
The label folded in 2001 but by that time, Shortee Blitz and
the Chubby Kids Show on Kiss FM was firmly established as an integral
part of the weekly agenda and had become synonymous with Hip Hop
in the UK. The show gained fans from all quarters, primarily because
it continually championed UK underground acts alongside their
bigger US counterparts.
The next two years were a turning point for Mr Blitz and as his
gigs grew bigger, he caught the attention of the music press and
continued winning various UK Hip Hop Awards. At the same time,
he was producing tracks with the likes of Braintax, Mystro and
Lowlife Records, as well as holding it down with the Kung Fu residents
at Camden’s Underworld.
In 2003, Shortee’s 6 years at Kiss were rewarded with a
history-making accolade when the Chubby Kids Show won a Sony Radio
Award for Best Specialist Show – a category the station
had never won before. That wasn’t to be the last mantlepiece
ornament the Nottingham born DJ was to win that year and in September
he won the MOBO Award for Best UK Club DJ.
Shortee celebrated his MOBO success by firing up an impromptu
set with Lil’ Kim, Blu Cantrell and the Black Eyed Peas
freestyling over his signature mixing and scratching at the ceremony’s
after-party open-mic session. 2004 followed with more highlights
which climaxed in Shortee Blitz making history again by hosting
the first ever Hip Hop line up in the Big Chill festival, celebrating
its 10 year anniversary.
Shortee Blitz presented a live hip hop party at Southern Comfort’s
Fat Tuesday tent with Rodney P & Skitz, Mystro, Skinnyman
and Mark Rae & Veba firmly smashing things up. “Big
Chill was good…a definite highlight. But there have been
tons of other highlights over the last few years - DJing for Jay-Z
in 2003, Cash Money this year and Rock Steady Crew in 1998, the
experience of DJing for Ty, playing in a field to 15,000 people
in Kenya, Hip Hop in the snow at Big Day Out in Val D’Isere,
beatboxing with Snoop and Dre, Spreadlove in Camden, the MOBO,
Southport Weekender, oh and the night I played with Jazzy Jeff,
Kenny Dope and DJ Spinna at The End.” Today Shortee Blitz
has two weekly slots on Kiss FM – a hip hop show on Wednesdays
and an R&B one on Sundays. And when he’s not on Kiss
FM, you can catch him on Kiss TV where he presents the Smooth
Grooves Chart Show.
When he’s not presenting the TV show he’s presenting
live events like The Prince’s Trust Urban Music Festival
or Nike Battlegrounds or throwing his own one-off ‘Blitz’
block parties. On the road, he plays up and down the country all
year round, has Summer residencies in Ibiza and all over Europe,
and has been making his mark in Australia after touring there
for 7 consecutive years and heavily influencing the scene. Plus
Shortee Blitz is one quarter of the Extended Players with Harry
Love, MK and Mr. Thing. It’s a wonder where he gets time
to work on perfecting his production skills!
